Brushmeisters of Brooklyn

Sumi-e by Shirley Bickel
Bicke'l Studio

As a young adult I would visit the Art Institute of Chicago to gaze at the works of art in awe and bewilderment. I determined to express my feelings with a paintbrush rather than words.

Although our styles and subjects may differ, the BRUSH is the key to all our work. On the following pages we will show you our individual work, as well as give information about our differences and similarities. We hope this site will be an inspiration for some to pick up the BRUSH for the first or hundredth time.

CAROL GILDAR — ORIENTAL WATERCOLORS
Carol's paintings convey a sense of color and light and capture the essence of her subjects in a style of impressionist realism. Carol paints Oriental watercolor in the Sumi-e style on rice paper and Western style landscape and still life painting.

 — I try to distill the quintessence of the land into art that transcends time and space. Sumi-e, with its eloquent simplicity and evocative quality, provides me with an ideal medium, My work evokes the essence of nature rather than the specifics of a particular place or thing. Many things are implied or left unsaid, creating a visual poem.
