VOLTAIRE...
the
most infamous and politically
contentious 18th century philosopher and anarchist was known to
ruffle many a French feather among the Parisian elite. For his trouble
he was often jailed or otherwise oppressed by the French aristocracy,
loved by the common ma, Voltaire's ideas have resonated with many
academics, artists and musicians throughout the last three centuries.
Best translated, Voltaire espoused the belief that society and government
should allow people to "Live and Let Live" and to be free
in their expression of self.
Fast
forward to Zurich, Switzerland, 1916, and we meet Monsieur Hugo
Ball. A serious student of the theatre and performance arts, Ball
associated himself with a group of like-minded expatriates in creating
a unique center for artistic expression. Ball chose to name his
theatre Cabaret Voltaire, in honor of its free thinking namesake.
